Ben and Deirdre’s Olympia, Washington wedding was packed full of all kinds of good things: colorful umbrellas, a quick bride and groom badminton game after their first look, Oscar-worthy speeches, a trumpet recessional, and guests who came from all over the world to celebrate. In classic Pacific Northwest fashion, the weather changed from sunny and warm to windy and rainy every three minutes, and Albee’s Garden Parties provided the perfect backdrop for this incredible day.
Ben and Deirdre live in Washington, D.C., but Deirdre grew up in Olympia. They met in the Peace Corps, and instead of trying to tell you the story myself I’m going to steal the blurb right from their wedding website because it’s already perfect:
“Deirdre and Ben met in the air-conditioned sanctuary of the volunteer lounge at the U.S. Peace Corps post in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania.
Ben had recently had his bank accounts drained by thieves, and was glad to be in the custody of the American government. Deirdre thought he was cute, but disapproved when he put his feet up on the lounge furniture.
That night, Deirdre and Ben had dinner together at the second best Mexican restaurant in Tanzania. Deirdre paid because Ben had no money.
Deirdre and Ben spent the next two years on long dusty bus rides to see each other. They practiced Swahili and taught each other to cook. They swam in the Indian Ocean and hand-washed their clothes. They fell in love.”
Also: when I was going through the planning stage with Deirdre she couldn’t answer very many logistical questions about their venue, but she was able to list every single animal on the property, and I think we can all agree that’s far more important.
